There will be a General Election within the next 4 months or so, and for me, like many local site publishers, this will be the first opportunity to give local coverage to an election campaign. In some areas there are council elections on the same day too. I can only imagine there will be a huge increase in the amount of stuff to publish from the various candidates' campaigns. So I thought I would start this post as a space to share ideas, thoughts and questions that may arise from covering an election campaign. Online Q&A It seems fairly logical to approach candidates and ask if they will take part in questioning. What's best - live chat format or by email? Same questions to all candidates or different? This also creates an opportunity for readers to get involved in submitting questions? Real life hustings An idea I had was to try and organise a proper, real life hustings between the candidates. This would be a real local service and be a great offline profile raiser for a site too. Could be expensive though, and will need a competent person to run proceedings. Would provide a lot of content for a site and creates opportunity for video / audio content too. Impartiality What, if any, issues surrounding impartiality will affect hyperlocal publishers? Extremists We all remember the controversy that surrounded Nick Griffin's appearance on BBC Question Time. If you are reporting on the campaigns of local candidates, will you also include candidates with extreme or controversial views? Advertising Will local political parties prove to be useful advertisers at the time of an election, and should you start soliciting ads soon? Or better not to alienate readers and steer clear of political ads? Election night Would you goto the election night count itself (if it is indeed on election night - apparently many places are trying to opt for the following day this time)? Got any thoughts of your own on these topics, or additional ideas and questions to do with covering an election?

Hi I am looking for examples of how hyperlocals are using council feeds and data, and spreading the word about service disruptions. Do any local sites automatically republish any council information? E.g. embed jobs feed, news feed, do any mash-ups. In the severe weather, are any hyperlocals publishing disruption information? Retweeting council tweets? Spreading the word to residents in any other way? Feeding anything back to the council? Thanks in anticipation!

Just to add to this thread, Maidstone.co.uk did sell and has a new website up. Fairly uninspiring stuff up there so far, and I don't get the impression that genuinely local content is the order of the day.

There's some nice widgets available from TFL to carry live tube sevice information on websites at <a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/widgets/," rel="nofollow">http://www.tfl.gov.uk/widgets/,</a> but I've just found this API which looks very cool. <a href="http://tubeupdates.com/" rel="nofollow">http://tubeupdates.com/</a> The guy is scraping the info from TFL and making it available by REST (XMl over HTTP) which means it can used in more flexible ways than just a widget. Nice, I will have a go with it soon.

I don't think the value of these domains is from the type-in traffic - I agree there's that not that much. I like this type of domain for being useful in terms of SEO and the instant credibility it gives you with readers, prospective advertisers and other local contacts for sourcing news stories.

There are really only two or three ways of monetising hyperlocal websites. These are on site advertising and establishing a free / premium business directory. Everything else is just a variation on this.

Hi, I'm Ray, from Manchester, England. I have been a domain name investor and amateur website developer for the last 5 or 6 years. About a year ago I became aware of the power of prime geo-domains and geo-domain development and also became aware of hyperlocal domain development which has many similarities to geo-domain development. I am currently developing an events and entertainment geo-site called Manchester Wide. Not sure if it would fit the definition of 'hyperlocal' but still faces many of the issues of hyperlocal site development, such as generating traffic, monetising sites and so on. Great forum idea, but will need a bit of promotion to reach critical mass, I would think.

Whilst you don't need a prime, generic as your hyperlocal domain name there are some strong plus points: <ul> <li>easy branding</li> <li>type-in traffic</li> <li>easy way to get inbound links with keyword-rich anchor text</li> </ul>

Interesting to see that the domain name Maidstone is up for auction at Sedo.co.uk, and has apparently received a bid already of £5,000. What do you think about the power of prime geo-domains such as this? I've always been a fan of this kind of location domain, and creating a site which is a clear authority site on the local area seems like a good way to win advertising as any local business man gets the name recognition of their town name dot co dot uk even if they don't know much about the web. But on the flip side, sometimes I think that having a site that sounds too official means readers, and other webmasters perhaps, judge you differently from other local bloggers etc. So what do you think of the domain name maidstone.co.uk and its apparent vaulation of at least £5k, and also what do you think of the wider issue of these geo domains?
