Harrogate.org.uk was recently listed on Sedo as having been sold for Â£1100. Nice price for a geo .org.uk I'd say. Yes, I agree. I don't think they 'get' hyperlocal yet. As you say the creation of a clear authority site is the way to go.

Just to add to this thread, Maidstone.co.uk did sell and has a new website up. Fairly uninspiring stuff up there so far, and I don't get the impression that genuinely local content is the order of the day.

I don't think the value of these domains is from the type-in traffic - I agree there's that not that much. I like this type of domain for being useful in terms of SEO and the instant credibility it gives you with readers, prospective advertisers and other local contacts for sourcing news stories.

Hi, I'm Ray, from Manchester, England. I have been a domain name investor and amateur website developer for the last 5 or 6 years. About a year ago I became aware of the power of prime geo-domains and geo-domain development and also became aware of hyperlocal domain development which has many similarities to geo-domain development. I am currently developing an events and entertainment geo-site called Manchester Wide. Not sure if it would fit the definition of 'hyperlocal' but still faces many of the issues of hyperlocal site development, such as generating traffic, monetising sites and so on. Great forum idea, but will need a bit of promotion to reach critical mass, I would think.

Whilst you don't need a prime, generic as your hyperlocal domain name there are some strong plus points: <ul> <li>easy branding</li> <li>type-in traffic</li> <li>easy way to get inbound links with keyword-rich anchor text</li> </ul>

Interesting to see that the domain name Maidstone is up for auction at Sedo.co.uk, and has apparently received a bid already of Â£5,000. What do you think about the power of prime geo-domains such as this? I've always been a fan of this kind of location domain, and creating a site which is a clear authority site on the local area seems like a good way to win advertising as any local business man gets the name recognition of their town name dot co dot uk even if they don't know much about the web. But on the flip side, sometimes I think that having a site that sounds too official means readers, and other webmasters perhaps, judge you differently from other local bloggers etc. So what do you think of the domain name maidstone.co.uk and its apparent vaulation of at least Â£5k, and also what do you think of the wider issue of these geo domains?
